Steve McCurry: Monsoon (Verenigde Staten, 1988): ongeveer 110 blz: Uitgeverij Timeless Books
Na een verblijf van 2 jaar in India, kreeg Steve McCurry van The National Geographical Society, de opdracht om een reportage te maken over de jaarlijks terugkerende moesson in Zuid- en Zuidoost-Azië. Steve McCurry reisde de moesson een half jaar achterna.
Vergeleken met zijn eerste boek "The Imperial Way" vind ik de gemiddelde kwaliteit van zijn foto's in "Monsoon" hoger liggen. Ook nu vooral foto's van mensen, zowel portretten als mensen in het landschap. De beroemdste foto uit dit boek is ongetwijfeld die van een bebaarde man die tot aan zijn nek in het water staat in het overstroomde stadje Porbandar in Gujarat, in het westen van India, en die zijn oude naaimachine boven het water houdt.
"Monsoon" heeft een inleidende tekst van 24 bladzijden en bevat 84 foto's.

- Monsoons occur in the sub-tropics, especially where land masses form roughly east-west coastlines. They are not single, aberrant storms, like hurricanes, but cyclical wave-like air masses that move into the Asian continent from the sea during the northern-hemisphere summer, and flow back to the sea in winter.

And yet I, too, was changed. Covering the monsoons meant total
immersion, a concentration that bordered on masochism. Day after day in
grit-filled heat not even meant for mad dogs or Englishmen. Day after
day wallowing in filthy water up to my chest, or standing in a
torrential downpour, my shoulder aching from the umbrella propped in my
armpit, and an incredulous assistant wishing he were somewhere else. I
began to learn the art of patience.
For
months there is no rain, then there is too much. Half the world's
people survive at the whim of the monsoon winds. This is the reality,
and it will stay with me forever.
